Q:  What does the YMCA offer to children and families?
A:

The JA Walters YMCA offers a variety of programs for you and your family.  At the YMCA your membership includes a variety of activities including but not limited too:  45 fitness/aerobic classes, access to all weight and cardio machines, two large swimming pools, 3 basketball courts, locker rooms, whirl pool, sauna, child watch (while you work out) and a variety of family events.

Family events include: movie nights, fourth of July Block Party, Pool Parties and more.

Youth Activities include: sports, day camps, after-school care, swim lessons, youth sports, fitness classes, and much more.

I have included a copy of the current program guide and encourage you to come take a tour with us.  We base all prices on your family income to make it affordable and there are NO CONTRACTS.

Print this reply page out and come try "A WEEK FREE" for you and your family so you can experience the YMCA for yourself. Just bring a copy and you will be one of my guest!  This goes for anyone reading this as well.

Q:  What type of diet should my child be on?  How can I support it?
A:

All family members should be effective role models by participating in all of the guidelines below:

  • Serve fruits and vegetables at every snack and meal. Offer fresh fruit and vegetable options daily.
  • Make water the primary drink option every day. Other options should be non-sugar-sweetened.
  • Include a whole-grain or protein option with every snack.
  • Provide healthy, unsaturated-fat foods at meals and snacks.
  • Emphasize moderation, balance and variety

You can also visit the website: http://www.ymca.net/healthyfamilyhome/eat-healthy.html for more information, recipes and activities.

Please know that the JA Walters Family YMCA has lots of encouraging activities to support their wellness including: fitness classes, kid yoga and walking clubs.

I have four children of my own from 4 to 16 and I know that the largest part of success is modeling the behaviors we wish to see in our children.  Its been good for our whole family.

Q:  What type of fitness or wellness program should one family get involved in?
A:

Thanks for the question.  If we could give more people the knowledge on different ways to get more involved in fitness and wellness programs we would surely have a healthier community.  One important factor for people to know is that for the first time in history parents will outlive this current generation of children.  A scary but real statistic that is alarming and very much not acceptable.

The YMCA is one of many options for you.  But regardless of where you go or if you choose to do some activity at home it is important to get involved.  Places like the Y just help encourage the results you are looking for.  I love the YMCA because it has something for everyone.

Here at the YMCA we have a 7,000 sq ft wellness center filled with Cardio (each machine is equipped with a person TV), weight machines and several unique pieces to help every part of your body.  In addition we offer a variety of 45 aerobic and fitness classes each week.  Combined with swimming, basketball and other activities there is plenty for the entire family.

Here at the YMCA you receive FREE appointments with our wellness coaches so that you get the full tour, assessment and a designed program that tailors to each of your needs. Children 10+ years old can work out with you but they do need to take an orientation course and learn the safety of our equipment.  Children under 10 can utilize the family work out room and take special classes including our NEW "Rock and Roll Circuit class" - basically a wild, music and light version that definitely keeps the kids interested.

Again, whether the YMCA or another option out there it is important to get your family jump started to activities that will encourage wellness and a healthy diet for all.

You can go to our National YMCA Website at http://www.ymca.net/healthyfamilyhome/play-every-day.html to get lots of information and tips for use at home and at the YMCA.

I hope this is helpful...as there is lots to share.  Come in and see us if you would like.  I will be happy to give you a tour.
